Its the Start of Junkfood Season

Well I have been back to work for about three weeks now. For those who don't know schools are a warehouse of sweets, junk food, and all the extra pounds you could want. The first week of school I had a bag of bite size candy bars dumped on the table I was working at. Without thinking I had about 8 bites before I noticed what I was doing. In the past two weeks there have been boxes of donuts, chocolate covered peanut butter, cookies, and much more left in the teacher's lounge. All of this food is left as either gifts from parents for what we do or staff members bring them in to share with their colleagues and friends.

Well this year I am going to try to steer away from all of the mass produced junk food like the candy bars and the donuts. However I feel that there will be days that I am pushed beyond my ability to resist and indulge in those 9 or 12 bites.

  1. Can you put some kind of a poster calling people to switch to the healthier foods? Let's them bring fruit, berries, .....what else? Veggies? Ha-ha. I understand you totally. I am a parent and was trying to ask other parents do not bring junk food for sharing with kids. I asked teaches do not use sweets as a reward for students. Well, not much success so far. The kids are taught about healthy eating by teaches and by us, parents, but somehow sweets make their way to school, anyway...

  2. Yeah I forgot about the classroom parties and birthday treats. I do send an email to my parents asking for health birthday treats. The students will eat good food when you give it to them. My students love to go to the garden and eat fresh green beans, cherry tomatoes, and more. But most of the parents don't believe me when I tell them this stuff.

  3. You should consider getting together with some like-minded colleagues to develop a wellness policy at your school.

  4. Come to Boulder and get bombarded by granola bars and Naked Juice. Yummy temptations, none the less.

  5. I know a teacher in Boulder. I should ask him if he is constantly assaulted by Naked Juice or a few bars of granola.
